Pen on Paper
This piece was created using hatching and cross hatching techniques with Micron and Prismacolor brand pens. The outline of the entire piece was first drawn lightly in pencil and was afterwards erased to leave the intricate pen-work front and center. This illustration took roughly 10 hours to complete and consisted of working on it in small increments every evening after work.
This piece was made purely out of fun. I absolutely love cats and love putting a smile on people’s faces. I enjoy watching people study my work, seeing the initial breath of understanding, and then the smile that breaks out on their face when the meaning clicks. It’s just an awesome feeling. I choose to use revolvers here as they’re immediately recognizable and they add to the Western feel. Hopefully each only has one round in the cylinder!
Artist and Crazy Cat Lady, Alexandra (b. 1992, Germany) graduated from Southern New Hampshire University in 2016 with a Bachelor’s in graphic design and media arts. Enraptured with animals and the feel of pen and pencil on paper Alexandra always wanted to do something with both. When she was just a little girl and was asked what she wanted to be when she grew up her answer was, “a veterinarian,” simply because she thought they got to draw animals all day and night. Still in love with animals Alexandra brings them to life in her own unique way using pencils, pens, and markers. Each whimsical piece shows her view of an assortment of animals (mostly cats) or her views of people as if they were animals themselves. Using cuteness and subtle humor Alexandra seeks to draw attention animals; to the fact that we are not the only ones living on this Earth, and we should take care to acknowledge and help the many beautiful creatures living with us.
Alexandra currently works part time when she is not working on her art. She currently resides in Columbus, WI with her husband, Justin, and their two adorable gremlins (cats), Xena and Maggie.
