Half Century Map
Virginia Janssen

Artist Statement
This piece was inspired by medieval maps, which are filled with fantastical creatures, very approximate measurements and imaginative architectural drawings. This map includes places and things that I have visited, loved, or dreamed of in my life. It is a map self-portrait of my half-century.
The paper was folded, then dipped in Indigo dye. The resulting negative spaces became the “landforms” for the map. The paper was further tea-stained before drawing.

Artist Biography
I am originally from MIlwaukee, Wisconsin. I have a BFA in Painting from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a Certificate of Completion from La Scuola Dell’Arte Della Medaglia in Rome, Italy, where I lived for several years. I have worked as a designer, engraver, and sculptor of coins and medallions, as well as many bronze relief portrait sculptures and plaques. Locally there is a portrait of Ray Nitschke on the bridge, and other bronze portraits at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay. Since 2012 I have been teaching Elementary and Middle School art, and currently teach at Notre Dame of De Pere School.
I work in a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, bas-relief sculpture, clay, metal, mosaic and textiles. My work is representational, though usually conceptual, in nature.
Narrative is an important element in my work. I have collected an assortment of images, symbols and words that are relevant to me and recur in my work. I am inspired by nature, its creatures, wildness and all of its visual texture.
