Artist Statement - Dunk It

With a liking for sports and a knack for playing basketball, along with coaching a girls middle school basketball team, Rhonda Atkinson had all the inspiration she needed to enter “The Athletes Call for Art" show in Green Bay at the Art Garage. Her passion for playing the sport and also coaching a girls basketball team was what motivated her to paint this powerful female athlete in acrylic paints on a stretched canvas. The figure represents the strength and the ability a woman can obtain as she competes in our world today of competitive sports.

Artist Biography - Rhonda Atkinson

Rhonda Atkinson grew up in the Green Bay area and continued to stay here while she taught art to the elementary and middle school students in the Denmark school system. During this time Rhonda entered art shows throughout the state and received several awards from her submissions. In her spare time she continued to take art classes and now paints for fun. After retiring from a career in teaching Rhonda continues to enjoy painting and also spends time sharing her skills and knowledge with others.

Rhonda believes that the visual arts are a very needed and an important aspect to the human race for critical thinking skills, self-expression and providing an outlet for nonverbal communication. Through the Arts Rhonda believes people will gain the opportunity to better communicate and interact with the world around them while broadening their understanding of the arts.
