From classics to contemporary favorites and everything in between, the selected readings at the Marathon for Literature were as varied and interesting as the participants who read them. The event raised awareness of literature and literacy and raised funds for the ARTgarage and Literacy Green Bay who will share the event proceeds of almost $3000. New books will also be purchased from the proceeds for three area shelters - Golden House, Freedom House, and NEW Community Shelter. To all the people in our community who sponsored a reader in the marathon and made this even a success, we offer our heartfelt thanks. Many thanks to Kara Counard, event co-chair, and to the ARTgarage board of directors for all of your hard work and planning that made the Marathon for Literature such a success. Also thanks to those businesses who donated food, gifts, or gave price considerations for items used at the marathon: Tundra Lodge & Waterpark, Barnes & Noble and A Better Footprint, Starbucks, the Attic Book Store, Lox, Stock, & Bagel, Kavarna, Pepsi, and the many great bakers who kept us in sweets. Last, but most certainly not least, a heartfelt thank you to Literacy Green Bay, One Book – One Community, Notre Dame Academy’s National English Honor Society and all of the readers whose dedication made the day so special for everyone involved. Thank you! Planning for next year’s Marathon for Literature will begin in July. We welcome others to join the team that will continue to lift up literature and literacy in our area…because, as Cicero said, “A room without a book is as a heart without a soul.”
